Kannada writer Shivarama Karanth won the Jnanpith award for his novel Mookajjiya Kanasugalu Grandmother Mooka's Dreams. Mookajji or Grandma Mooka literally means the silent grandmother. Her grandson Subbaraya takes care of her. She remains silent most of the time. But when she does talk, it is an out-pour of thoughts, she often describes her dreams, or visions to her grandson Subbaraya. She goes into a state of trance when she touches an object.
